Dinner Rolls

Chapter 22: Dragon Reconciliation

Two weeks. It took two weeks for Mirabel to calm down enough to change back into a human. During those two weeks Svend had scarcely let her out of his sight for fear of losing her. She is a beautiful dragon, the dark blue sapphire running all along her body, with a delicate amethyst across her wings and spikes. Her eyes have changed to amethyst even when in human form. Although, the first time Svend saw her she was so spitting mad her eyes looked more fiery than amethyst. She calmed down just enough to listen to his instructions on how to shift but then she caught sight of him and was a dragon again in less than two minutes.

Svend was torn. He understood her anger, of course. He just hopes she eventually sees that he transformed her out of love. Maybe. Eventually. Hopefully. Or the whole experiment was a waste.

“I want to go home to my family. So teach me whatever you need to in order to spend time with my family.” Mirabel practically shouted at me one morning.

“Ok, yes. Of course. You just have to be able to manage your shifting so you don’t accidentally turn into a dragon in the middle of your house.” Svend was so shocked she was speaking to him again he overshared which immediately set Mirabel weeping.

“What if I burn their house down? Will I be overcome with the desire to eat the little humans that are my family? What if I turn into a dragon and my family tries to hunt me down and kill me? What were you thinking? I am a human, not a dragon!” Mirabel was finally ready to get everything out in the open. Her anger had simmered just enough to stay human through a whole conversation. Maybe. Eventually. Hopefully.

“I am so very sorry. I wasn’t thinking. I was just so excited to be with you and around you and I knew we couldn’t have a real relationship if you didn’t even know I was a dragon and I couldn’t talk to you about that unless you were a dragon so. . . .I turned you into a dragon?” Svend’s apologetic tone turned his confession into more of a question.

“What do you mean! You turned me into a dragon? Did you not know what you were doing? Did I just spend too much time with you? Will Fiora and Leoric and Leif turn into dragons too? Are they already dragons and no one told me?” Mirabel was slightly hysterical at this point. If Svend was actually a dragon, who knows what other fantastical scenarios could also be true.

“No, it’s just me. Well, and Gregory. You can’t catch dragon...ism. You have been drinking my dragon blood for over a year and that is what made you change. You can still be as human as you would like! You are just a human who can now fly and breathe fire and stuff.” Svend really did think being a dragon was the coolest thing ever. He just needed Mirabel to calm down enough to see that too. Maybe. Eventually. Hopefully.

“DRAGON BLOOD? You’ve been feeding me dragon blood! How?! Oh, no, the tea! I knew there was something strange about that tea. I watched you make it! How could you have possibly put dragon blood into my tea for over a year without me noticing?” That was the last straw for Mirabel. She was back in dragon form quicker than Svend could shout another “I’m sorry!” Fortunately, dragons have a very high tolerance for dragon fire. Unfortunately for Svend, he was still in his human form when her fire hit and human clothes in particular are not so fireproof.

Svend quickly shed his cloak and dropped to the ground to smother the flames on his pants. He was still rolling around a bit in the dirt when he heard a distinct dragon chuckle. Just the one. And then another. Soon this massive beast in front of him was shaking uncontrollably as she guffawed and chortled. With each roar of laughter she let out little bursts of fire that had Svend jumping, trying to dodge the flames, which would just start her laughing all over again.

Finally, after what felt like several minutes of dodging flames, at least to Svend, Mirabel shifted back to a human, still chuckling to herself.

“Ok, that was pretty hilarious. You should have seen yourself jumping all over the place! Why didn’t you just shift?” Mirabel smiled at Svend for the first time in almost a month! Svend was a little bit shook. He couldn’t believe all she needed was a good laugh to change her opinion! He was also shocked, almost speechless, by her smile. Mirabel had been nothing but glares and frowns for so long, he had forgotten how beautiful her smile was! It lit up her whole face and it was all he could do to string a response together.

“Uh… I didn’t want you to feel threatened?” Svend finally spit out.

“Threatened? By another dragon? By you no less? Psh. What’re you gonna do? Breathe fire at me? I’m a dragon now sonny, thanks to you, I’m not running from rabbits anytime soon.” Mirabel finally sat down. She gave the ground next to her a little pat. “Come on, it sounds like there is a lot we need to talk about. Let’s talk over dinner. You make the fire and get us a wolf or something and I’ll fix it up.”

Svend plopped down immediately and began making a fire, he was so relieved by this turn of events he didn’t even think of starting the fire as a dragon. Once the fire was stable, he flew off and found a sizable elk, because nothing says peace offering like dragging in an elk carcass. In the meantime Mirabel had been making rolls. There are the rolls she made.
